Does Japa without sadhana help get rid of tendencies of the mind ?

Have you experienced any changes in tendencies of mind by normal japa (without any Sadhana).

Listen to this real life story of Kalavati – an unlettered woman who did chores like washing dishes/mopping while chanting a mantra given to her by her Guru, and attained quite higher state of consciousness, as told by Swamiji.

Swamiji knew her, conversed with her several times and blessed by her in poorva ashram (before renouncing).

She didn't know any sadhana; she didn't have the luxury to take time off from her duties to perform one anyway, as she had to make ends-meet for her family – consisting of four children of whom she was the only parent after death of her husband at a young age.

Jai Sri Hari 🙏

ABSOLUTELY!! A BILLION PERCENT YES!! ..Rahul its more like going to the gym. Merely going to the gym regularly without putting in sincere effort into your workouts wont give you any worthwhile results. However, if you go to the gym regularly and put in the required efforts into your workout routine, you will definitely see results and when you see the results, it will further inspire you to keep going to the gym, forming a virtuous cycle.

Just like that, if you do like what Raviji suggested above, do your mantra japa with the right Bhava, then soon enough you will start to connect with the energy of the mantra. Connecting with the energy of the mantra is like forming a relationship or a bond with the diety associated. Mantras are all living pieces of energy and the more you repeat them with the right bhava, the more you will start to connect with the energy of the diety. When you connect with the diety, you will know it and feel it within your being and that in turn will give you the energy and willpower to take your practice to the next level, which includes Yagna., Tarpans etc..

My 2 cents

If you do the Japa, along with a conscious effort to improve the tendencies of the mind, then yes, absolutely.

1. Merely doing Japa, without making effort to change oneself is not enough.
2. Doing Japa, like a parrot, and without the bhava also would not make any impact.

Ravi’s answer sums it up. Adding on to that, doing japa with mindfulness and absorption will help you understand your mind and then be aware in your daily life, whenever impulsive reactions (due to tendencies) rise. When you are aware, then you can choose different ways to react and over time, your tendencies will melt.

Additionally there is also your body and mind aligning with the energy of the mantra (sonic sound), if you do it with devotion and mindfulness.

So yes japa can help but I feel Sadhana is a catalyst and really works on tendencies:) If you’re doing japa anyway, might as well go for sadhana instead.

I like the whole process. Especially the Arti at the end of the Japa as well as the Yagna. Could be because music is food for my soul.

When you are doing japa do you get a tingling sensation all over your body? That would indicate that you have connected with a higher consciousness. It also indicates that your neurons are charged.

तुलसीदास जी तो यहाँ तक कहते हैं कि - भायँ कुभायँ अनख आलसहूँ,  नाम जपत मंगल दिसि दसहूँ..... Japa is the easiest way of self purification. And, With bhaav and consistency, the results are much quicker 🙇🏼‍♀️🙇🏼‍♀️🙇🏼‍♀️🙇🏼‍♀️🙇🏼‍♀️ I am a very lazy being, yet even very raw japa has been a great game changer. 🙇🏼‍♀️🙇🏼‍♀️🙇🏼‍♀️🙇🏼‍♀️🙇🏼‍♀️🙇🏼‍♀️
