How to be nice and all smiles?

[Solved]

1

Recently my offline college has started and I often find myself in the middle of boring or mindless chatter. It can't be avoided because we are only starting to get to know each other. I feel like I'm putting up a pretense of being nice and cheerful when I don't really feel like it. Any advice on this matter?

Edit: Thank you soo much everyone for your answers. It really helped! 🙂❤

Hey Ahana! Heading back to college after a while to be surrounded by chatter can indeed be draining. In 2013, this is what one my mentors shared with me, when I was looking to start graduate school:

Make no more friends than the number of fingers on your hands.

What he implied was that a few, close friendships are way more valuable than engaging in conversations with several people. The subtext was also helpful: social aspects of college life should not create FOMO, because it does not really matter as much. In fact, it rather impedes one’s ability to form close friendships because to find good friends is tough, as it is to be one.

So for what it’s worth, be nice but feel free to not indulge in boring or mindless chatter. With Swami’s grace, it’s only a matter of time before you find like minded people in college. And even if you don’t, you’ll find them elsewhere 🙂

It can be tough and it really depends on your priorities. If you would like to socialise and have a group of friends, and specifically those friends, then I guess you would have no other choice.

However, I would advise to socialise only as and when needed, if you are okay with spending time alone.

Otherwise, from my own experience I noticed that when we move away from mindless chatter and forceful interactions, we may be alone for a while but after some time, Nature sends us the right people where we hang out effortlessly.

Hope this helps:)

Swami Ji once said, Its not possible to be all smiles all the time. If someone is doing that, it might be because of a dental problem 🙂

But polite yes, we can always choose politeness. Whenever I am not in a good mood, I let others know its not a good time for me to interact etc. I avoid interacting when I have that energy.
