Do you have a grave image about spirituality in your mind? Meaning do you relate to being spiritual as a serious person, with a grim look, uttering words of wisdom in profound tranquility? Or do you take yourself too seriously that no one can make fun of your mistakes.
You will find your answer in the following story:
There was a young monk in China who was a serious practioner of Dharma. Once this monk came across something he did not understand, so he went to his master. When the master heard his question, he kept on laughing and walked away still laughing.
The young monk was very disturbed by his master’s reaction. For 3 days, he could not eat, sleep, and concentrate. At the end of the third day, he went back to his master and told him how disturbed he felt. When the master heard this he said, Monk, do you know what your problem is? Your problem is that “YOU ARE WORSE THAN A CLOWN”
The monk was shocked to hear this, “Venerable Sir, how can you say such a thing? How can I be worse than a clown? The master replied, “A clown enjoys seeing people laugh, you…. You feel disturbed because another person laughed….tell me, are you not worse than a clown.
When the monk heard this, he began to laugh and was enlightened.
