Current culture embraces distraction and has an unstable foundation. Examples: Open Plan offices, Instant messaging, Social media feeds. There are many different ways to integrate deep work into your life, but the author provides a few different types, so to choose whatever works for the individual.

This approach cuts down all digital communication and keeps it to a minimum possible level to produce high-quality work. It works for people who’s work is apparent, individualized (Writers).

The Bimodal Philosophy of Deep Work Scheduling
Under this approach, you dedicate clearly defined time for deep pursuits and leaving the rest open to everything else. During Deep time, no distraction only intense and uninterrupted concentration. Stretch could be week-long or month-long based on different time frames. Deep work provides nourishment to Deep ideas and propels profound growth.

The Rhythmic Philosophy of Deep Work Scheduling
It revolves around persons ability to do hard things consistently day in day out and create a habit out of it. 

  1. Chain method to create a visual reminder of work done regularly on a calendar (Famously called the Jerry Seinfeld method).
  2.  Adding some 2 hours every morning before your workday starts.

This approach takes some initiative to take a break from familiar surrounding and move someplace else to do deep work. But real factor here is the psychology of committing to something which unlocks the needed mental resources. Sometimes to go deep, you must first go big.

Don’t Work Alone
I collaboration workplaces where different kind of people work together author realized its better to have a chance encounter as well as isolated deep thinking places. Private office connected by shared hallways is better then open plan office with no deep thinking personal space.

Be Lazy

The ability to concentrate intensely is a skill that must be trained. Also, you need to remove the dependency on distraction. We think we avoid activities because we lack motivation but its the mental training we are lacking. In boredom, we seek distractions. Constant attention switching online has a lasting negative effect on your brain. Once your brain has become accustomed to distraction, it is hard to shake of distraction when you want to concentrate. When every boredom takes you to a smartphone, then it’s not ready for deep work. Overcome your desire for distraction.

Don’t Take Breaks from Distraction Instead Take Breaks from Focus.

 Digital Detox 

  1. Stay away from technology at least one day a week. Create internet blocks, after those internet blocks don’t use technology.
  2. Be mindful of distraction.

Quit Social Media
 If you want to keep friendship, keep is off social media. Do activities like walking, dinner, sports. It would be best if you took time and care to decide which digital tools you allow to claim your own time and attention. Don’t Use the Internet to Entertain Yourself by clicking from one article to next, from one app to other.

Drain the Shallows
When people have less time to do the same work, they value time more and waste less.

  1.  Make People Who Send You E-mail Do More Work (Send me an email If?)
  2. Do More Work When You Send or Reply to Emails.
  3. Don’t Respond to verbose email which does not have clear reason to respond (Sender should have a convincing case to get a response).

Personal Notes

Cal Newport has done an excellent job in explaining the need and benefits of deep work. Then he moves to how to remove distraction and achieve deep work. This book has excellent insights and does create fears in you about your daily habits. A lot more is in the countless examples that are given by the author. I tried my best to do justice to distil books idea. Please read it thoroughly if you want to gain more insights.
