Sufi Saint Hassan narrates about one of his earlier masters. He says one of his first masters was a child. When he newly gathered the knowledge about philosophies, God and truth, he wanted to tell everybody about those things. There is an itch for knowledge that a lot of learned people want to tell others about.

It was dark when he was entering his village and he saw a child coming with a lantern in his hand. So he thought, “Why not practice my lectures on this boy?”

So he stopped the boy and asked him a simple question “What is it that holds in your hand?”
“A lantern” replied the boy.

“Do you know where the light in the lantern comes from?” asked Hassan, thinking that as the boy answers, he would then guide him into the mystical world of philosophical questions and answers.

The boy brought forward the lantern, blew the light and said, “I have sent it back to where it came from. Do you know where it went? If you do, why don’t you go after it?”

Hassan fell to his feet as the boy taught him a valuable lesson. The spiritual path may have a lot of questions, but ego is definitely not the answer.

Find your truth, not to defeat others but enlighten your own dark corners within.
