We have all heard that necessity is the mother of invention. While this may be true for many inventions, some inventors even attribute their work to serendipity or divine intervention. A quick google search reveals a list of serendipitous inventions that changed the world and range from penicillin to Teflon. Famous mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan credited his acumen to his family goddess, Namagiri Thayar (Goddess Mahalakshmi) of Namakkalis He is quoted as saying that he had visions of scrolls of complex mathematical content unfolding before his eyes. He often said, “An equation for me has no meaning unless it expresses a thought of God.”
Every invention has the power to the change the world and one such veritable power is Kindness. There are several inventions attributed to kindness. For example, magnetic shirt buttons were invented as an act of kindness as there needed to be a better clothing option for people with disabilities. Braille was invented with kindness towards the blind so that they could read and write. The language Esperanto was invented as the linguist realized that major disputes were the result of peoples’ distrust in those who spoke a different language. He wanted to unite the people by teaching them a common language. Esperanto is the world’s most widely spoken constructed international auxiliary language. It was intended to be a universal second language for international communication.
As consumers, we hold the power to make kinder choices in what we purchase. Food that is organic, sustainable grown, Products available in recyclable packaging, clothes that last longer, are all options that allow us to be kinder to our planet.
We may feel we’re just a cog in a machine, but with network and influence, even a cog can halt or change the direction of the machine. Our choiuces can indeed change the world. Deciding where to spend our time and money matters a great deal. from buying a bar of soap to investing in Mutual funds, dig deeper and see where the money is actually going. It is better to invest in a sustainability driven company rather than an alcohol or tobacco company. It is important to know whether the companies we fund indirectly are harming the earth or trying to save it. While watching YouTube videos, pay attention to the language and content of the influencer you’re indirectly popularizing, because such influencers have the power to make or break systems and governments.
