1-June-1980

Peringara,

This date is very remarkable in my life as it is the official date for the commencement of monsoon in Kerala as well as the School reopening day . I am a student of The Prince Marthanda Varma High School of Peringara. Going to 4 th A  this year. The rains and the school always excited me. Not because I am a very eager to study there are other reasons!

Last week I went with Appoppan and bought new school box ,a bigger one this year, and books from Prabhus. After a little coercing I got a new  orange round bellied water bottle and a umbrella with a fragrant plastic handle too. Then we went George ‘s cloths shop and bought some cloth materials for Granny and me . I wanted new uniform in stiff poly cotton cloth this year. But this plan was foiled by  Valiyammama ( Granny’s elder brother). When he visited us he gifted me a set of Khadhi material for the school uniform.  Green for skirt and white for blouses.  Valiyammama was a renowned Freedom Fighter and naturally he loved his little grand niece wearing Khadi uniforms.

We were a family who followed matriarchy and Valiyammama was the head of the entire family and was given highest of respect by all the family members.

Let me not digress here,

I was not a very studious student. The class toppers were Saraswati Amma and Geetha Devi. Two cute Brahmin girls  , Saraswati  Amma always stood first and Geetha Devi always came second in all exams. I was no where near them . But  I wasn’t very low like the class ruffians Ramesh Kumar and Sanal Kumar. I was floating somewhere in the middle !

My Appoppan was a teacher of Prince School , that gained me some recognition in the class.  My only love was reading Balarama and detective story books from the village library and eating crunchy jackfruit chips. These  things were in plenty too.

So all set wearing my brand new uniform , school box in one hand I set out for the first day of school holding  Appoppan’s hand .

1-June -2022

Pune City

I am still excited about first of June and the arrival monsoons.

It is 7 am in the morning. Made my tea and  filled half a cup.  I will drink two more half cups by  9 Am. I wake up a little late these days, In fact I wake up by 5.30  and as soon as I wake up a little voice inside me says ‘’What are you going to do at this hour ?’’ I go back to sleep again.

I drink my tea sitting in a huddle with myself. Time to get into action. I go to kitchen and make one cup of black coffee and another nescafe. Nescafe is for my son and black coffee for husband. Both of them go their offices by 8.30.  I rush to make the lunch boxes and breakfast.

My daughter is still sleeping . She wakes ‘’aram se’’ as she is working from home .

By 9 AM I already had my third half cup of tea and breakfast.

Kitchen is almost looking like a battle field. I feel exhausted like a rag.

I open my diary and write down a time table for the rest of the day

 Mali, Beachside cottage

6 AM

You know why I am here ,  I love quite  beaches , nature, solitude and everything beautiful!

Woke up eagerly to see the sunrise . Made tea , quickly changed into a loose cotton top and flare pants. I feel good .Last two years of regular workout and meditation did wonders to my mind and body.

There were a few early risers like me on the beach. I sat down under a willow tree my regular spot to watch the sunrise.  There is joy and expectation. I calmly fixed my eyes to the horizon. I could see a small orange spot breaking the darkness at the horizon. The first ray of golden light slowly pierced the horizon, soon breaking into many and a fully lit morning sky. I sat there observing my breath. Happy inside, happy outside.
