The power of an ordinary day 2Outlander Season 5 Episode 12

We always consider an ordinary day just a mundane routine life. Nothing new is happening, same boring stuff. But when some bad event happens, we again start missing those days which were very normal, but at the same time, full of peace. Small issues were there, but things were always in control.

To understand the power of these ordinary days, we need some quiet moments to reflect on our lives. Today whether we consider ourselves successful or failure, it is the compound result of those ordinary days. The relationships which are still with us and the relations which are no more are also the outcome of those ordinary days. The way we live these simple days where there is no excitement just routine shapes our future and choices. The days are so quiet that it’s difficult to consider them as a life-changing event, but they are. Sometimes we feel that a particular day shaped our future because so and so event happened and we neglect all the past simple days when we were working for it or subconsciously wishing for it. These are times where we develop new skills, habits, beautiful memories and experiences.

William Martin in his book The Parent’s Tao Te Ching: Ancient Advice for Modern Parents beautifully explains the power of these ordinary days through these lines:

“Do not ask your children
to strive for extraordinary lives.
Such striving may seem admirable,
but it is the way of foolishness.
Help them instead to find the wonder
and the marvel of ordinary life.
Show them the joy of tasting
tomatoes, apples and pears.
Show them how to cry
when pets and people die.
Show them the infinite pleasure
in the touch of a hand.
And make the ordinary come alive for them.
The extraordinary will take care of itself.”

Right now when I see the world in so much turbulence, I wish for those ordinary days when everything was normal. But I have also started embracing my normal days because they hold the power to my life. We should start appreciating this mundane life because we never know when it’s going to change for the better. I am learning that I don’t need to wait for a day when something great will happen and my life will be all good but I need to start doing some little good daily and just accept that future depends on these simple days. It depends on how beautifully and gracefully we carry ourselves in these ordinary days.
