Whosoever longs to stay in the bliss’ highest peak,
The shelter of Lord he must devotedly and humbly seek.
Says Naanak, O mind, listen to what I clearly share,
Obtaining this human body is exceedingly difficult and rare.
Guru Ji is giving an advice, which is essential for all of us: if we really wish to live a peaceful, there is no other solution than the singing of the divine name or hymn with utmost devotion. Otherwise, he says we will be living a selfish and demonic life. He also wants us to consider that this human life is so difficult to attain. Due to the fact, we humans most of the time behave like demons: drink, eat, sleep et cetera. But for human to be really a human it is necessary to evolve spiritually and emotionally. When we evolve spiritually, we appreciate life and the world in totally different way. First we lived in the sense of profit and loss (sure if we in business department, that is part of our job). Now, with spiritual and emotional evolution, we start seeing the world with awe, with kindness, with love. There is a shabad in Gurbaani (or Gurubaani) of Bhagat Kabir Ji about Sri Krishna Ji rejecting the invitation to dine with Duryodhan Ji, and going to Bidar Ji’s house. This shows the importance of love, and devotion. One line that strucks the mind is: Kheer Samaan Saag Main Paayea – This (Saag) to me is as sweet as Kheer. Sri Krishna Ji did not see the world with profit or loss, “if I don’t dine with Duryodhan, I’ll have bad reputation.” He only accepted Bidar Ji’s love. We can be rich or pauper, but if we have love and devotion in our heart, Sri Krishna Ji(or Mother Divine, Sri Hari Ji, Ishvar) will accept us all.
Similar story is present in Guru Naanak Dev Ji’s life – Bhai Lalo Ji’s food, chapati with daal was much sweeter than Malik Bhaago’s feast of extraordinary cuisine. Bhai Lalo Ji was an honest and pure devotee filled with love, on the other hand Malik Bhago, a rich landlord always ready to show off his power.
This human life is precious, we can live with love and remembrance of the Divine.
