O man, you did take with effort many actions to felicity gain,

But did not try, chanting God’s glory, to save thyself from pain.

O mind, listen to what Naanak is trying to remind,

Everything occurs according to God’s sacred plan and mind.

Commentary:

Guru Ji with his accurate definition of devotion, is reminding us to remember God, the lord of all. For we can attain many pleasures in this world, yet when the knife of pain pings or stabs, we cry: ‘why me? why is God ruthless?’ Well, Guru Ji here gives us an advice, that when we confront an adversity, all we need to do is to sing the glories of Lord, all the moments of Lord, and think of God. And by doing so a fragrance of humbleness and peace pervades our heart. If we are to suffer, its pain will be easy to bear for us. Cry, if we want, and then let us cry before the Divine.

Historically, it is important to remember that Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Guru Ji of Sikh tradition, was boiled in hot water and on his head was poured the hot sand to make him suffer, but He did not allow this physical pain to arrive at his heart, where the coolness of divine grace was bestowed through his devotion and God’s praises. Even at this moment of tortures, he was saying: ‘Tera Kiya Meetha Laage, your deeds, O Lord, are sweet and kind.’ And he did not let Jahangir’s men convert him to Islam, at the time and he never lost his patience and trust in the divine. Has it been today, he would not let him convert to any religion, because his thoughts were that every religion professes love at its core. If we followers know this concept, the sense of superiority will vanish away from our heart.

Be it Sikhism, Islam, Hinduism, Tao or every other religion has only wisdom and love at the heart of it. Our ways may be different, but we are heading to the same goal: to live in divine love and devotion.

P.S.

God bless you all.
