This body and wealth the Almighty gave you as heartfelt gift,
Yet you have created between you and Lord a loveless rift.
Says Naanak, O human you have been ignorantly mindless,
And now you are wavering before the death, O helpless?
Guru Ji is telling to remember God, in every going and coming breath. It is thanks to divine blessings we can still walk and work on our own self. The more we work on our own self, through meditation, through devotional worship and singing the praises of the Divine, the better our life will be. Love and Grace will naturally flow through us because there pervades a certain quietude in our mind, thanks to singing praises of God with patience and gently.
Some sacred scriptures say that even this body, which we call ours, is a gift of God. Guru Ji is scolding us as a father does, so we can achieve what is important in our life, for our improvement: spiritual and mundane. Therefore, he highlights the fact that it is sign of arrogance to consider body as ours, because after all it is god’s gift to achieve a goal, and not waste it for futile deeds. Also, the wealth we gain is thanks to God. Our mind and hands work so we can earn and eat, so it becomes necessary to thank God for everything we have and, help others with seva-bhava (in state of selfless service).
Guru Ji says we should not forget God. If we forget it, then we are witless.
