The role of a “Guru”, in the spiritual path is second to none. Most of us following the spiritual path or beginning on it are often in a dilemma that how can i evolve on the spiritual path without a guru or get troubled by the internal debate of “when I will be bestowed with a worthy guru”.
Going back to the scriptures, it is advised to consider ” Lord Dakshinamurti” , as your guru.
Lord Dakshinamurthy is an aspect of the Hindu god Shiva as a guru (teacher) of all types of knowledge. This aspect of Shiva, as the original guru, is his personification as the supreme or the ultimate awareness, understanding and knowledge.[3] This form represents Shiva as a teacher of yoga, music and wisdom, and giving exposition on the shastras.[4] He is worshipped as the god of wisdom, complete and rewarding meditation.[5] As per Hindu scriptures, if a person doesn’t have a guru, they can consider and worship Dakshinamurthy as their guru. Eventually they will be blessed with a self-realised human guru, if they are worthy.
Here I am sharing a powerful stotram that is practiced in our sri ku la school of tantra to emvoke the blessings of the cosmic guru.
śrī dakṣiṇāmūrti stotram
maunavyākhyā prakaṭitaparabrahmatatvaṃyuvānaṃ varṣiṣṭhāṃtevasadṛṣigaṇairāvṛtaṃ brahmaniṣṭhaiḥ | ācāryendraṃ karakalitacinmudramānandarūpam svātmārāmaṃ muditavadanaṃ dakṣiṇāmūrtimīḍe |
viśvaṃ darpaṇadṛśyamānanagarītulyaṃ nijāntargataṃ paśyannātmani māyayā bahirivodbhūtaṃ yathā nidrayā | yaḥ sākṣātkurute prabodhasamaye svātmānamevādvayaṃ tasmai śrīgurumūrtaye nama idaṃ śrīdakṣiṇāmūrtaye ||1||
bījasyā’ntarivāṅkuro jagadidaṃ prāṅnirvikalpaṃ punaḥ māyākalpitadeśakālakalanā vaicitryacitrīkṛtam | māyāvīva vijṛmbhayatyapi mahāyogīva yassvecchayā tasmai śrīgurumūrtaye nama idaṃ śrīdakṣiṇāmūrtaye ||2||
yasyaiva sphuraṇaṃ sadātmakamasatkalpārthakaṃ bhāsate sākṣāttattvamasīti vedavacasā yo bodhayatyāśritān | yassākṣātkaraṇādbhavenna puranāvṛttirbhavāmbhonidhau tasmai śrīgurumūrtaye nama idaṃ śrīdakṣiṇāmūrtaye ||3||
nānācchidraghaṭodarasthitamahādīpaprabhābhāsvaraṃ
jñānaṃ yasya tu cakṣurādikaraṇadvārā bahisspandate | jānāmīti tameva bhāntamanubhātyetatsamastaṃ jagat tasmai śrīgurumūrtaye nama idaṃ śrīdakṣiṇāmūrtaye ||4|| dehaṃ prāṇamapīndriyāṇyapi calāṃ buddhiṃ ca śūnyaṃ viduḥ strībālāndhajaḍopamāstvahamiti bhrāntā bhṛśaṃ vādinaḥ | māyāśaktivilāsakalpitamahāvyāmohasaṃhāriṇe tasmai śrīgurumūrtaye nama idaṃ śrīdakṣiṇāmūrtaye ||5|| rāhugrastadivākarendusadṛśo māyāsamācchādanāt sanmātraḥ karaṇopasaṃharaṇato yo’bhūtsuṣuptaḥ pumān | prāgasvāpsamiti prabodhasamaye yaḥ pratyabhijñāyate tasmai śrīgurumūrtaye nama idaṃ śrīdakṣiṇāmūrtaye ||6|| bālyādiṣvapi jāgradādiṣu tathā sarvāsvavasthāsvapi vyāvṛttāsvanuvartamānamahamityantaḥ sphurantaṃ sadā | svātmānaṃ prakaṭīkaroti bhajatāṃ yo mudrayābhadrayā tasmai śrīgurumūrtaye nama idaṃ śrīdakṣiṇāmūrtaye ||7|| viśvaṃ paśyati kāryakāraṇatayā svasvāmisambandhataḥ śiṣyācāryatayā tathaiva pitṛputrādyātmanā bhedataḥ | svapne jāgrati vā ya eṣa puruṣo māyāparibhrāmitaḥ tasmai śrīgurumūrtaye nama idaṃ śrīdakṣiṇāmūrtaye ||8||
bhūrambhāṃsyanalo’nilo’mbaramaharnātho himāṃśuḥ pumā-
nityābhāti carācarātmakamidaṃ yasyaiva mūrtyaṣṭakam | nānyatkiñcana vidyate vimṛśatāṃ yasmātparasmādvibhoḥ tasmai śrīgurumūrtaye nama idaṃ śrī dakṣiṇāmūrtaye ||9|| sarvātmatvamiti sphuṭīkṛtamidaṃ yasmādamuṣmiṃstave tenāsva śravaṇāttadarthamananāddhyānācca saṃkīrtanāt | sarvātmatvamahāvibhūtisahitaṃ syādīśvaratvaṃ svata-ssiddhyettatpunaraṣṭadhā pariṇataṃ caiśvaryamavyāhatam ||10|| vaṭaviṭapisamīpe bhūmibhāge niṣaṇṇaṃ sakalamunijanānāṃ jñānadātāramārāt | tribhuvanagurumīśaṃ dakṣiṇāmūrtidevaṃ jananamaraṇaduḥkhacchedadakṣaṃ namāmi ||11|| citraṃ vaṭatarormūle vṛddhāśśiṣyā gururyuvā | gurostu maunaṃ vyākhyānaṃ śiṣyāstu cchinnasaṃśayāḥ ||12|| nidhaye sarvavidyānāṃ bhiṣaje bhavarogiṇām | gurave sarvalokānāṃ dakṣiṇāmūrtaye namaḥ ||13|| om ̐ namaḥ praṇavārthāya śuddhajñānaikamūrtaye | nirmalāya praśāntāya dakṣiṇāmūrtaye namaḥ ||14|| aṅguṣṭhatarjanīyogamudrāvyājena dehinām | śrutyarthaṃ brahmajīvaikyaṃ darśayanno’vatācchivaḥ ||15||
īśvaro gururātmeti mūrtibhedavibhāgine | vyomavat vyāptadehāya dakṣiṇāmūrtaye namaḥ ||16|
cidghanāya maheśāya vaṭamūlanivāsine | oṃkāravācyarūpāya dakṣiṇāmūrtaye namaḥ ||17||
Try chanting this stotram after waking up as it was part of our nitya karma in our ” How a tantric starts his day ” routine, but more on it some other day.
Thursday is considered auspicious for commencing the practice, as it is the day of “Guru”.
