There are majorly only 2 things that allow for suffering in the human consciousness.

Those are the mental faculties that are bestowed by God only on human beings. The amazing faculties of memory and imagination.

Memory makes us think of the past and we re-live the hurt which happened that one day, many years ago, and then we have a vivid sense of imagination which makes us think of all the bad which can happen tomorrow.  We need to rid ourselves of this. If somehow we can take care of these two then maybe, just maybe we can diminish the suffering.

And hands-down the best way is to be mindful. 

Having the realization that this is just a memory and deciding to not re-live it and choosing a happier, positive tomorrow will help a great deal. Practice mindfulness and I am sure it will make a big difference.
