I will try to write about these five things, one each day.

LOVE, LUST, LONELINESS, LONGING AND LIBERATION. I will write them to my capacity and understanding. I am in no way an expert on these. Well hardly anyone is because there is no set formula to these. And that makes us humans eager to understand and decipher.

LUST

Lets first sweep the snake out from under the carpet.

Lust as commonly understood is extreme passion or willingness for sexual encounter. And it is not just limited to humans but also in animals and birds which is a very interesting subject if one wants to delve into it. So it is not just fantasy of homo sapiens, there’s a great deal of biology and chemistry behind it that is spread evenly or unevenly in all things that breathe. While all other beings are studied as test subjects to reach to some conclusions it is us humans we are majorly interested in.

Blame it on whatever you wish, biology, chemistry or psychology, all men and women have gone through it in different degrees and measures. Some in ecstasy of chasing it, some in anguish and frustration of controlling it, some in guilt  and shame of even having such thoughts, feelings or sensations.

But Lust that I am trying to talk about is not just limited to excessive and unreasonable physical attraction. It is an evil that comes in many faces. There’s  Lust for power, lust for money, lust for success etc etc.

And as humans it is very natural for us to justify our actions. To name our greys as black or white or paint our black and white with greys. Or to blame it altogether on something else to avoid shame or to avoid being outright wrong.

Hitler was sick with lust for power and had his reasons (which many believed to be right and hence took part in it) to cleanse an entire class of people.

People who have done the biggest money scams in history were not feeling sorry for being successful at it until may be when they finally hit the wall. Sometimes quite literally while being chased.

Historical serial killers, most of whom committed crime against women, when caught, studied and worked upon had some lacking or excess in their biological beings. Although there are psychological reasons and excuses to blame for their actions but that does not make them any less culpable or less deserving of  punishment.

And Lust does not come empty handed or alone. It brings its two off-springs with it. Greed and Addiction.

Lust makes you want things you probably don’t need. It makes you want to hoard out of greed. Makes you want it for the fleeting pleasure you get out of it, even if the result of having it is against your well being, physical or mental. And you do it over and over. That’s addiction. And that addiction occupies the place in your mind meant for other priorities of your life. And life from there is a downward spiral loop.

What to do then? How to rise above this? To answer something like this one has to look towards the ones already risen above. In one of his videos, Mann ki Shnati kaise Prapt karein –  How to be at peace, Swamiji sums it up all in one sentence. Mann ki sunna band kardo. (Stop listening to the mind).

Leaving animals and birds aside who go with their animal instincts we humans are endowed and gifted with discernment. Our capacity to make a choice and capacity to reason. We have the ability to not give in to our urges and temptations that might work against us. The ability to stop, think and move in the right direction.

I would like to finish with a quote from Bhagvad Gita that I came across while studying for yoga theory exams. It lay emphasis to always keep a check on your senses and desires.

Bhagvad Gita cites in Chapter 2 verse 60 –

यततो ह्यपि कौन्तेय पुरुषस्य विपश्चित: |
इन्द्रियाणि प्रमाथीनि हरन्ति प्रसभं मन: ||

The senses are so strong and turbulent, O son of Kunti,

that they can forcibly carry away the mind even of a person endowed with discernment who practices self-control.
