The Bhagavad Gita is a treasure house of wisdom. All the principles from the Bhagavad Gita are meant to culminate in our taking shelter of God. Let’s reflect on some of them.

EQUALITY

Our body is temporary. We are the eternal spirit soul. This makes us all equal in the eyes of God. The learned look upon everyone with equal vision whether it is a human being, cat or a dog.

HUMILITY

We should not be anxious to be honored by others. Respect should be given to all without any expectation. Ego makes us arrogant and rely solely on ourselves. By being humble we acknowledge that we have much to learn. We are part and parcel of God and are empowered by Him. Humility leads to acceptance and peace.

RIGHTEOUS ACTION

There are various types of dharma: towards family, community, nation and so on. Our real dharma is surrendering to God and working for the welfare of others.

FREE WILL

We have the freedom to make choices. We can choose our thoughts and actions. When our free will is tailored to act in accordance with divine will, it becomes effectively utilized.

AHIMSA

Ahimsa leads to compassion towards others. Our happiness should not be at the expense of others. We need to be in harmony with all. Ahimsa should be followed as long as it is not an impediment in observing dharma. By pursuing right action, one is following ahimsa.

LOVE

Loving God and being devoted to Him is important. We then develop affection towards all of creation.

Contemplating on these values is key to our spiritual growth. Sometimes we may find ourselves making progress. Other times, we may find that we are going back a few steps instead of advancing. It is important that we do not get discouraged and keep persevering on the path.
