The one who doesn’t seek praise, nor indignity he does fear,
Gold and iron are the one and same to whom it is totally clear.
O mind, listen to me, Naanak does gently say,
Independently and freely that person lives every day.
Guru Ji says that a person, whose mind is free from duality and lives in a state of profound devotion, does not bother about praises and slander. If someone slanders him/her, it is fine, for they are slandering from their own perspective. If someone praises him/her, it is also fine, for they are praising from their own perspective. Whatever we do if we do it consciously and with sheer love, we will live peacefully. According to Guru Ji, we should regard gold and iron as dust or earth, for they come from the same source – earth. This means that we will not run after gold and trouble our mind. If we have some gold (can also mean the status of being overwhelmingly rich), that’s alright and if do not have it, that’s also alright.
