The mind gets involved in the pleasures of world-game,
And we have forgotten to chant Lord’s precious name.
Of what importance and use is this life, Naanak says,
If the glory of Lord we with love never sing and praise?
Guru Ji is telling us to behold our life all over again, how we are leading it. The moment we begin to engage with the world of senses, we forget Lord’s name and we forget that Lord is all pervasive. If someone insults, we want revenge; if we eat, we indulge in it a lot without consideration of our body, of our mind; this is not the way of life for a sincere devotee. We in our life will have two choices in front us, and we will have to consciously choose what to do, which in the consequence either will give us peace or the other person. Guru Ji also telling us to never forget Lord’s name, for after all our mind must not command us, but we must guide our mind to live in devotion, so devotion (Bhakti) becomes our own essence, without any pretense or without any show-off. We must keep our devotion for the Divine in our mind, and every second that passes will be better.
We all might have heard a story from our grandmothers or mothers that once upon a time, a child in the womb prayed to the Divine that he will pray everyday, please let me out of this darkness. And when he came out of the womb, after few days he forgot all about his promise, he began to engage with his senses, without regard of the Divine. One day, when he was old enough, he began to loot only to quench his cravings, his senses were his masters now, and there was no devotion in his heart. So it happened that he at deathbed remembered his promise to the Divine, but it was too late, his voice crumbled in his throat, his eyes shed few tears. And promised that he will in the next life pray to the Divine.
This story was told mainly to instill good values in our hearts, we can live in the world honestly when the Divine is in heart.
Satnaam Sri Waheguru, Jai Sri Hari.
