You did not make any effort for what to do was necessity,
Noose of greed has gripped your neck with great intensity.
O Naanak, the time has gone and in a blink of eye fled,
O blind man you could not see, and now tears you shed.
Guru Ji is talking about practicing love and meditation, spending quality time by singing God’s name, rather than running from here to there because of our greed. When that noose is around our neck as if we are a dog carried by greed. Guru Ji warns us that time of death is near when we are most of the time on the bed because all the energy is drained. Guru Ji cries about our misery and ask us: “why have you wasted your precious time and now that the hands of death are going to squeeze our heart and stop it, you cry out of helplessness?” Indeed, we are so blinded by this fame, prestige, and various attachments in material world or outwardly spiritual world (there is no such devotee as me), that we do not want to give time to our own existence and contemplate on God’s name and on how to wisely live our life.
