Why do you show off thy false status, ego and pride?

Know that the world is a dream in which during sleep you slide.

Truly, nothing is yours in all these worldly things,

By contemplating ,Naanak the truth forth you brings.

Commentary:

Guru Ji as a matter of fact is telling us to remember that life is ephemeral like a dream. So, it is futile to be proud of something, for it will vanish away the moment the last breath leaves our body. He expands his point by saying nothing is actually ours. Because when the body dies, nothing we called ours till the last second of our life will go with us in next life: be it our body, our mansions, our cars, our children, our wife, our husband, our parents. To go with us, they also must give up their life, which is futile and improbable. Now, we may say but we love them, we made those things with great efforts, how can we say that those are not ours? We must understand that Guru Ji never told us to not love them, or not live in those mansions, or not to drive cars. We can love, we can live at fullest, we can drive, but we do not have to get attached to anything. We have to learn the art of letting go and have less expectations. Getting attached to something is the cause of all major diseases of mind, the moment we get attached to someone, we just want them to live our way, and always expecting something in return from them. In love we can share an extreme bond, and care. And living with utmost peace with our self alone, we can truly learn to live contently and love and be compassionate. Attachment can never equal Love, although all relationships begins with attachments, but it is love that makes the life beautiful. Attachment is about wanting; Love is about giving and sharing. Every act done in attachment transforms in duty (something we do, because we have to), and every act done in love becomes meditation.

Guru Ji’s words are trying make us realize that a simple and kind and mindful life is far better than a life of show off and ego and pride. Even though we have a million-dollar house, we can live simply and with love and mindfulness, knowing that we will one day go away from this earth.
