This is a Day 5 Exercise from the os.me writers workshop. We are to write a story that answers the following three questions.

  1. Who is Sonia?
  2. Whose house is she exiting from?
  3. What is she carrying?

Isn’t that Sonia? She should be at work now, shouldn’t she? Why is she coming out of Mr. Arledge’s house now at noon? Oooh. Juicy. I can’t wait to call Simone and Clara and tell them all about it. She’s wearing sunglasses, and she’s carrying a bag with her.

Her husband Rob is a fine person. He doesn’t deserve her. How could she think of cheating on him? And Mr. Arledge? I thought he was a saint. Appearances are indeed deceptive.

I must call Simone immediately.

Me: “Simone, you will never believe where Sonia is coming from”.
Simone: “I can’t talk to you now, Jane. I am preparing for a meeting.”

I don’t believe this. Is that meeting more important the breaking news I have with me? This is how she treats the scoop of the century? Well, her loss. Let me call Clara.

Me: “Clara, you will never believe where Sonia is coming from”.
Clara: “Oooh, Jane! Juicy! Pray, tell!”
Me: “That’s my girl! Simone is coming out of Mr. Arledge’s house! At noon! I bet they are having an affair. They must have been having this affair for years. Poor Rob. And what about Mr. Arledge? I always knew …”

Clara interrupted me to mercilessly burst my bubble.

Clara: “Let me stop you right there, Jane. Sonia is helping Mr. Arledge broker a deal. Thats all. “

What a bummer. I had planned to tell everyone at the country club about Sonia and Mr. Arledge. That would have made me popular for at least two more weeks.

I was right, after all. Mr. Arledge is a saint. I still have my doubts about Sonia. She’s not the goody two shoes everyone thinks she is. I’m sure there are secrets behind the blameless facade she portrays. I will get to the bottom of it.

“Jane, haven’t you left already?”

My thoughts get broken with these words from Jacob. Darling Jacob.

“Didn’t you say your husband is coming home for lunch today? Aren’t you late?”, Jacob asks me. Yikes! I’d better run. The monster is indeed coming home for lunch today, and I said I’d be home. I lost track of time with this non-existent Sonia drama.

“Bye darling, I’ll miss you”, I whisper romantically to Jacob, as I run to the car.
